It is a shame for the illiterate people to live in the most civilized, prosperous country in the world when they can't even speak, write, and read in correct English. Now, I'm not talking about the newly arrived immigrants who are still learning English. I'm talking about those people who were born in this country and the illiterate people that are posting questions on the "Yahoo Answers". They made so many trivial grammar and spelling errors. They got offended and then deleted my answers. I was trying to help them to write correctly in English but they were too foolish to understand my good intention and noble gesture.

They don't understand the difference between: lose or loose, their or there, mine or my, guy or guide and the list goes on....

Grammar errors:
She/he/it/they and I go to....(not me and her/him/it/them go to)
She/he/it does...(not she/he/it don't)

Spelling errors such as:
buoyfriend, gurlfriend, kar, attrakcion, amberress, skool...etc.

They are mostly illegal immigrants, who refuse to learn our language, and way of life. I stress "illegal". legal immigrants are great for this nation of ours.

There are a multitude of answers to the question regarding 'illiterate people' - it may be deemed cool to spell things the wrong way, they may well be illiterate for numerous reasons which include; maybe missing school due to bullying, laziness, naughtiness etc or they may just prefer to write that way (which I have to agree I find annoying, but I remember being a kid and writing in 'code' with the help of my 'Speak and Spell' computer - my friend and I also used 'another' language to speak to each other in called 'illagoo').

Some people are just simply 'not that intelligent' (not everybody has academic ability) - or maybe its a simple spelling error.

However, concerning the part of your question whereby people take offence to your 'correcting them' then I have to say that I think its easy to take offence to this- its patronising and can be embarrassing.

I recently answered a question and spelt text as 'txt' - it was an unintentional mistake, yet someone took it upon themselves to correct me and I have to say that I didn’t take kindly to it - I DO know how to spell 'text' but I made a simple typo, and it was unpleasant to have my error highlighted to everyone else as I did not feel that it was worth mentioning and it was nothing short of petty to do so!!!

However, the most important thing you have to remember is that some people are just 'not that clever' and they probably struggle in life with things that we take for granted such as reading bus stop signs or filling out forms (especially for jobs etc) and they also have (and maybe still do) suffer ridicule from other people for this.

It is wrong of you to assume that ALL these people have not taken every advantage of the free education system in this country, it is also wrong of you to fail to consider the circumstances of other people

Your question reeks of arrogance and ignorance and also seems to me like a plain and simple 'pop' at all those who have had your questions deleted.

I tend to be rather put off by the illiteracy displayed here, as well. I'm led to believe that it arises from two sources. One is that grammar is no longer considered important enough to be taught in schools, although an understanding of grammar is a prerequisite to logical thinking.

The other reason for illiteracy is that it appears most people are getting their information aurally, from television. Not only does this fail to acquaint a person with written language, it also suggests that the critical faculty is not active while the information is being absorbed. This accounts, I think, for the frighteningly bad reasoning one sees here.

There is a wonderful book called "The Plug-In Drug," by Marie Winn that explores some of the problems caused by television addiction. I would recommend it highly.

Nothing is Free. When people expect something for nothing they usually get nothing. Our school system is becoming a Day Care and the Teachers are being limited in what they can do. If, a child not want to learn, the Teacher just has to teach those that do.
Much of the spelling may not be errors, just an imaginative way of spelling a different way.

The definition of "illiterate" explains the inability to read or write, then the lack of familiarity with language and the violation of approved patterns of speaking or writing.

"1 : having little or no education; especially : unable to read or write
2 a : showing or marked by a lack of familiarity with language and literature b : violating approved patterns of speaking or writing" -Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary.

This definition may imply grammar, but it would be a long stretch for it to imply spelling without mentioning the word.

Life is too short to read a dictionary as if it's a novel!

Just don't read questions that are misspelled.

I think too many people are more interested in having a good time and disregarding their education and the price they will pay for it later. They live in the moment without future considerations . Also I think it should be made much more difficult with harsh penalties for dropping out . Parents also need to work harder at early ages to instill a desire to learn and succeed in their children and also teach them self discipline . It’s not a good idea to wait till the teenage rebellious years to do this as it needs done early on .

I honestly think that the curriculum has been dumbed down now , compared to when I was a kid . I remember that if you took 2 years of Spanish when I was a kid , you had a pretty good grasp of the language . Now after 2 years , some kids cant put a sentence together .

Because parents don't care. Also, the proliferation of single parent families contributes greatly to the problem. One parent working sometimes two jobs just to keep the heat on has a very hard time keeping tack of what their kids are doing on a daily basis. I'm afraid we are stuck in this downward spiral and don't really see any way out.

I would blame the teachers that pass these children. Most of the illiterate have spent YEARS in the public school system. Some even have HS diplomas.............its easier to pass a kid than teach a kid, and some teachers take the easy way out.

Well, on the Internet, some people don't pay attention to their grammar and spelling. Honestly, I don't, either. But I can use proper grammar and spelling if I have to.

No... If I may correct you ... ...

Education is free for kids and immigrants .. not American adults...

American adults have to be qualified for free aid or "get loans" in order to be highly educated..

If you feel so "perfect" maybe you can apply to become a genius.
Instead of being an english teacher.
