Love is a choice to put someone else's needs or desires above your own. Affection is a way of expressing love. By tenderly holding someone, hugging them, or giving some non-sexual sign that shows them you care for them, you meet one of their deepest needs...to be loved.

Gary Chapman put out a book called The Five Love Languages. http://www.fivelovelanguages.com/learn.html In it he explains how there are five primary ways to express love for someone. Affection is physical touch, but he also suggest you can spend quality time with someone, do acts of service for them, give them gifts, or spend quality time with them. It's actually a decent read.

Hope that helps!
