I think the main reason for anyone to have a cell phone is for their own safety and protection. In case of an emergency, such as a car accident or being stranded, you at least have a phone to get a hold of someone. Or if you are seriously hurt, doctors and police officers have the numbers of people who may be able to help identify you and come see you at the hospital. They are also good for checking in with your parents and being able to call if you need a ride or something.

Are you asking as the Teen or Parent? My daughter is 10 and has a Firefly. It is a cellphone that can only call Mom and Dad and 20 people that I have programmed into the phone. There is a special button to call 911. The only people that can call her are the ones in her "phonebook" I got it for her because of the after school programs that she is in. We have had times where they were cancelled or the times where changes. This just gives me and her father peace of mind that she is only a call away no matter when she is. Also she is getting to the age where she likes to have "picnic",with her friends at the park (2 blks away) but it still concerns me that she is where I can't see her. So the FIREFLY IS WONDERFUL.

I gave my son a cell with GPS locator on it. So I can log on and see exactly where he is. it also has a feature where if he goes outside the area I set, it sends me a text message. The service is offered through Verizon. Other providers might offer the service:

Chaperone lets you easily locate your family members handset from your Verizon Wireless phone or PC - in real time, at any time.

Chaperone with Child ZoneSM lets you define a zone - specific area, such as a school or summer camp. When your family member enters or leaves the zone with their handset, Child Zone will automatically send an alert to your phone with the time and location of your family member's handset.

I also like it because he can call me if he is going to be late, or he can call me to let me know or ask permission to do something/go somewhere else.

You can always get ahold of them.
You see on the bill who they are calling.
You can also control what numbers they are allowed to call.
If they dont have a car and they are involved in sports or something they can call you ahead of time to pick them up that way you arent waiting forever for them.
Cell phones are cheap so when they get their first job guess what...their first bill is their cell phone bill!

well lets see...lol
from a teenagers point of view... to call friends!!!
from a parents point of view... for emergencies and keep up with were your child is and if things are ok and safe.

but if the teen wants it to be social with, then they should EARN the privilege of a cell phone, through chores, or getting a part time easy job to help pay for it. this also teaches responsibility and increases the personal value of the phone.

well for one its a way for parents to keep in contact when their kids are not at home second if they're at school and something goes wrong and the school can't call home they would have their cell, and third if they are out and about and just happens to get lost they have a cell so they can call their parents or call for help

Because they have a job and can pay for it themselves. That's the only reason mine will have one.
