Ha well, I'm like 5''1. I obviously don't reccomend you being a hitter. If you don't like setting, trying being a defensive specialist. I've been on varsity since my first year as a seventh grader. First. Get a volleyball because the more time you touch one, the better you get. I have small hands to. I am a setter but i work on it every single day. Work on tipping the ball and hitting. Just because your short doesn't mean you can laze around and depend on your hitters. A good rounded player does it all. Practice overhand serving. If you want to stand out try a jump serve. Practice your digging and rolls. Do about 100-150 calf raises a day and 45 second squats. Also, a good volleyball player has strong abs. Work on leg raises and crunches. :) I can guarantee your coach will love you if you stay "low." But mostly, have a good attitude. Sorry I know i wrote alot but I love volleyball and know alot so. GOOD LUCK HUN :)

The hardest skill to master in volleyball is passing (Bumping). There is always a lack of quality passers on any team. If you are a great passer they will find a spot for you to play. There are plenty of people who have very successful careers doing nothing but playing defense (passing). If you play in a league with a libero great, if not there are always plenty of middle hitters that can't pass and need someone to play back row for them.

the best thing you can do is to get low when you are passing the ball. when serving, you have to make the toss absolutely perfect. have some people who were on the team, or who played last year help you. dont be shy ask for help. this will also help your social status. and when you make the team, you will already have friends on the team.
hope i helped.
ps let me know how tryouts went. ive played for 4 years and still get nervous at tryouts.

I think passing is the most important part of volleyball because you have to be a strong passer to play.

if you are a middle work on jumping, the higher you can jump the better. If you have a blank wall, get a couple pieces of tape. Without jumping, stretch your arm up (with a piece of tape in your hand) and place the tape where your hand stops. Now do that jumping and see the difference. Every day work on trying to beat that higher piece of tape. Also work on your blocking footwork and get the appropriate steps down. Also, work with a setter if you know one and work on a quicker approach in the middle. You want to work on timing and arm swing, learn to snap your wrist and follow thru.

work on being a team player. Serving is also a good skill to have, make sure it's accurate. But mostly if you practice your skills will improve.
