I have anxiety issues and I've been clenching my teeth alot when I sleep, i've been getting constant neck and shoulder pain and it feels like its getting hot.

I was wondering if TMJ could cause this?

Absolutely. Grinding one's teeth cause physical and emotional stress on the structures around the joint. Also, a fracture or dislocation in any of the joints near the jaw may bring on TMJ. You will need a thorough medical exam performed by a D.D.S. You may need to be fitted with a mouthpiece covering your top and bottom two front teeth. This costs about $350 - $400. It has helped many TMJ sufferers. I have one myself; I started getting severe migraines a few years ago and the neurologist and I, after other options didn't work, decided to check into the possibilities of TMJ. As it turned out, the device didn't help me as I didn't have TMJ but it was just one of the ways to eliminate another possible reason for the migraines.

TMJ can cause neck, shoulder, back, head, and sometimes even chest pain because of the jaw's proximity to other joint structures. Ask your dentist about what medications you can take to ease the pain, although if you're a grinder I imagine he'd probably be more privy to utilizing a mouth piece.

All the best, hope you feel better soon.

The same muscles are involved for headache...
Muscles get knots called trigger points. These make the muscles tight causing them to press on nerves and other thing.
Pain can be referred from places other than the head.
#1 The first thing is to take a couple swigs of molasses or eat a couple of bananas. They contain magnisium and potassium both of which muscles need.
#2 WATER she should be drinking 1/2 gallon minimum. The head of neurology at UCDavis likens a body running low on water to a car running low on oil (the engine can seize).
Get a good (deep tissue) massage (to loosen the trigger points) on the back, shoulders and neck. Make sure to press up at the base of the skull where it meets the spine.
You rub or lightly scratch everywhere on your head. You will hit spots that are tender these are trigger points. The idea is to rub across them 6-12 times per session up to six times per day until they go away.
For more information on trigger points read The Trigger Point Therapy Workbook by Davies.

Yes. It is all connected. Try to get a night guard from the drugstore or your doctor. Consult with your dentist to find an oral surgeon who can work with you. Also try to find a physical Therapist who specializes in TMJ.
