I would suggest Spanish first for two reasons:
1-Spanish is simply more useful if you want to travel. It's found in many more countries than French.
2-Spanish is a simpler language to learn. Once you master basic grammar and vocabulary, it is very easy to keep going from there on. French is more complicated quite frankly, and much more difficult to read, write and comprehend.

Like most people said here, Spanish would be the best choice for you as it is a widely spoken language in more than 20 countries Spanish is currently the second most spoken language (by natives speakers) in the world, the first is Chinese so many people could wonder: if chinese is the most spoken language in the world, wouldn't it be better to study chinese? and the answer is no, why not? because you say you live in the US (California) therefore Spanish will be A LOT more useful and practical than chinese for you as there are over 30 million people who speak Spanish in the US (mostly in California and Texas), furthermore, there are more Spanish speakers than all the other languages combined in the country and with Spanish you can go to Mexico and many other Latin American countries whereas with chinese you only have China above all and a few other countries, I mean learning a regional language like Spanish will be much more beneficial than studying anything else, because you can use it right away, you can practice with the native speakers around you and it's definitely used in lots of works in CA and the whole country as for French, it's kind of the same story that chinese lol

You've said it. If you want to learn something more, let's say useful, go with Spanish. If you don't like following the main stream, French is a good choice and it is also Latin, which may help you if you also decide learning Spanish later on.
Now for a thought: If you are in Texas and do not speak Spanish and do you survive? By Mimic?

Spanish would help you out more in the long run, as far as getting paid more for a job, but French is a much prettier language. Why not both? Do one now, and the other one later. The more languages you know, the better!

Take the Spanish, for every reason you mentioned. You can take French after you finish the Spanish. Being bilingual in a language that is widely used will help you in the work force.

Spanish because you live in Texas. You will be surprised to find how many Spanish words are closely related to English words. (more so than French)

French is a very beautifull language but you will use Spanish in this country more than anything else but English.

Latin is great for the roots of words.
Spanish starts slightly difficult, and gets easier. French starts easy, and gets progressively more difficult.
As someone who took both Spanish and French in school, I'd recommend Spanish, for ease of learning, and the consistency of the language itself. Of course, Spanish is more useful nowadays, no matter where in the US you are.

Spanish, definetely. it opens up so many more job oppurtunities, especially in your area. spanish is one of the top five languages. you obviously speak english, and unless you're gonna tackle Mandarin Chinese, you should go for spanish. french is remarkably absent in that list. it is a dying language.
if you change your mind away from a romance language, try russian. its very fun to learn. i'm learning it now in high school.
