I've seen these collars at the dog store for unruly dogs. I guess they come with remotes and allows you to "zap" the dog when he's misbehaving. Never saw anything like it before.

I asked for opinions on it, didn't say I was planning to buy one. Thanks.

I think they are often misused and cause more problems than they solve.

There are other much more positive methods to train a dog. A e-collar in my opinion should only be used as an absolute last resort. Needless to say in all my years of training dogs, I've NEVER once had to resort to using one.

Most people buy them and think they are an automatic fix to all there problems with there dogs. Its not the case. The fact is the dog still remains untrained, and often times becomes scared as hell because the people misuse the collar. Once the collar comes off the dog will know and is back to its bad habits.

I've also seen people literally zap the hell out of there dog because they were mad at it. Its appalling to see this happen.

For the price of an e-collar you can pay for a good training class, which I think is the FAR better option, for both human and dog.

Hey Hottie, maybe you should try putting one of those one shock yourself with it, and then come back and tell me it doesn't hurt the dog.

They are a wonderful tool, in the hands of an experienced trainer. I have used them for years, with great results. Never had a dog display any adverse reactions, never had a dog develop any neurotic qualities because on one. It is the idiots that buy them and use them without knowing what an electric collar is all about the bothers me. Them and the other humaniacs here who think that any form of a correction is cruel to the dog. How many of the people that gave their opinions here have ever trained a real dog to do anything beyond basic obedience? Not that many, I promise. How can they come on here and spread lies based on OPINIONS that have no foundation in reality? And the problem is that the newbies here will believe that crap that it's being spewed and take it as gospel. FACT, there are dogs that CANNOT be trained without the use of a training collar, there are dogs that are so hard, that one electric collar does not do much for them. FACT, you will never be able to fully proof your dog without some sort of physical correction. FACT, all dogs need to fully proofed before they can become members of a home or society, otherwise they become a menace.

They work well when used correctly on dogs that know what they are meant to do or not do, especially with behaviours that occur at a distance, e.g. not coming when called, chasing livestock, chasing vehicles, or running off after game. In these circumstances they can save dogs' lives, preventing them from being hit by cars, shot or euthanized. However, the average pet owner usually does not know how and when to use a shock collar, and has not tried all conventional training methods first. When used incorrectly or out of anger they can ruin a dog.

I've never really heard of that, but it seems like an okay idea. My aunt got a zap collar for her dog, but it zapped everytime she barked. It didn't work well though; It would zap the dog sometimes even when he wasn't barking.

She ended up not using it....It cost $150.

It takes a responsible person to use this.
It would be terror for an animal that had a cruel, abusive owner. I'm against it for that reason. I just don't have enough faith in the common sense of most people.

I wanted to reply to this question, but as I read through the answers, everything I wanted to say about these collars was written by JESS.

At first they work, but after a while your dog will get to know if its on or off because of the vibration.some dogs ignore it.

I think its rather inhumane. I would much rather teach a puppy or a dog through going to classes together. It also, (classes), helps strengthen the bond between you and your dog.

I think it's inhumane and flat out mean.

What if someone zapped a person whenever they misbehaved?
