His past actions resulted in legal issues, no job history, only a GED, no drivers licence, no friends,no clothes,no money, no identification. He is teetering on the brink of disaster but, when I list all his hurdles as I have just done I feel just as hopeless--- so how should I direct him?

You cannot do it. He must want to do it for himself. First, is he on drugs at this time? Find out, if you do not know! His legal issues must be resolved by himself. Does he need to go to drug court, or is he on probation or parole? He can go to the nearest DMV office and get an I.D. card. If you think he FEELS hopeless, get him into the County Mental Health program. Often, they will take him for free. They will give him meds that he may need, if he is depressed. I am thinking that he lives with you at this time. Are you making sure that he is taking advantage of MediCal (in CA) or other medical help? Is he on the streets? Everything is very important to answer to yourself and to your son. If you would like to email me, tell me your state, and the problems in detail, I may be able to steer you/him in the right directions to get out of this mess he is in. Watch out for depression and make certain if he is on or not on drugs. If he is on drugs, seek out the clinic near you that has classes for people on drugs and will help him get off drugs, or to, at least, be as safe as possible while ON them. Suicide is a real possibility when everything just feels hopeless. Get him medical help, before he gets to this stage!

Instead of listing all his failures you should praise him when he does well.I was in a similar situation but I learned to pick myself up and keep going.Everyone has their breaking point when they are just tired of being in the situation thay are in and they choose to resolve it.Unfortunately your son has not come to that turning point in his life yet but do not give up on him or criticize him,but do not baby him forever because he will never be able to stand on his own two feet.
