I was working up front as a cashier yesterday, and these two kids came in whom go to school with my youngest brother, the one goes " are you Nick's sister?" i go "yeah" then the he goes " he didn't think you were because you're too cute to be nick's sister"

So...he's saying i was ugly before now i'm now? what the heck...so can someone be complimented and insulted in the same sentence...

Yeah, it's very possible. They're actually insulting Nick. Saying he's ugly, so they're surprised he has a cute sister.

People do this all the time and it's very rude. The other day I heard "Wow, that's an awesome idea. You really came up with something amazing for once."

(Complimenting the idea then implying the person never thinks of anything good.)

To answer your question, the boys like nick and they really don't think he's funny looking. It is common for boys to pick at each other like this, saying they look funny, etc. I'm in my 20's and I still do it. Immature? Maybe. However, they are probably good kids and just giving you a compliment! It is entirely possible to insult and compliment someone in the same sentence. The real science is in knowing that person so well, that you know exactly how they feel about something. Then playing on that. If anyone knows what I'm saying, maybe you can explian it better. Anyway, this can be highly effective, or incredibly evil!

My sister in law is a professional at this ... yes, it is possible to be insulted and complimented in the same sentence.

For what is worth, it sounds like the boys were complimenting you and insulting your brother. Not that this was a good thing to insult your brother...

That was a compliment to you, and an insult to your brother.

Actually, they probably really like your brother. I think they were trying to hit on you.

And yes, you can be complimented and insulted in the same sentence - it's known as a backhanded compliment or veiled insult. My parents were famous for them.

Yes it is possible, it is called a back-handed compliment. My mother-in-law has made an art of it. However what you encountered was just a child's way of telling you that he thought you were cute. There was no insult there.

I think he was just trying to hit on you. Maybe what he meant was that you're good looking and Nick is not
