Before one can tackle the athletic demands that a cheerleader has, you already have to be in good shape. In order to do the many stunts, tumbling and jumps that cheerleaders are required to do, major muscle groups have to be conditioned, and many hours of practice goes into this conditioning.

If you want to cheer, I would suggest enrolling in a gymnastics class to learn basic tumbling (cartwheel, roundoff, back handsprings) and work your way up to aerials and tucks.

I would also suggest that you run 1 mile a day while saying your cheers and chants. This will help your stamina.

Good Luck!

Cheerleading is definitely a fantastic way to get in shape. Coming from a current cheerleader, you are doing so much movement that you can't NOT be in shape. Especially if you stunt, physical fitness is key. If you aren't in the best possible shape, cheerleading just won't work. Also, if you are a tumbler on your squad, ha ha bring on the rips and the eight packs! <3

kind of. Dancing is always good. It tones your muscles. In cheerleading, you get to move. Not only that, you exercise your muscles in the mouth because you get to scream really loud. Haha... So i think it's good exercise.
