Thats actually a funny story.

My son didn't start talking until he was almost 3, and then it was in full sentences all at once.

So I decided to be a smartmouth, and ask him why he hadn't talked sooner.

His answer was precious (and true).

1. I didn't have anything to say.
2. Grownups talk so much I didn't think they would care if I talked or not.

Both my kids said a few words before they were 1 but my first barely said anything between her 1st and 2nd bday. I even had her hearing checked by a specialist (my mom and Gpa are both deaf in 1 ear). She has no hearing loss. Shortly after her 2nd bday she really went to talking and hasn't quit since!!! So I'm not too worried about my 2yr old son...he uses 2-5 word sentences and is repeating more and more every day. It's amazing what they understand even when they can't say it!!! I taught them basic sign language..eat,milk,cup,etc when they were arond 7mo or so. If you don't know any signs make up your own that you and baby will understand. Just use the sign every time you say the word....they catch on quicker tha we do sometimes!!!

every child is different as you know...it's hard not to compare (it's human nature, so don't feel guilty)...boys are suppose to be "slower" with language than girls....language isn't just "speaking" - it's also responding to questions asked (for instance, "where are your toes?", "go get your book," "where is tiger?" etc.)

...with that said, my son's first word was "mama" at 5 mos., followed by dada- he's now 15 months old and says about 20 words and started connecting "dinner time" and "all done" a few weeks ago... he's also bilingual (Hindi and English) and understands/follows directions in both languages when spoken to...

i've included a link where you can see a milestone chart for toddlers.

My little darling could say "dog dog" and "bubba" at 6 months.

Then it took 3 or 4 more months before she started saying "dada". And she would only say "ma" when she was angry at me and crying (like when I put her down to sleep).

Now at 20 months she is saying quite a few words, but they can only be understood by me, hubby, brother and her babysitter, no one else can understand.

www.babycenter.com has a great chart for language development skills. Just search for language development chart and you should find it.

All babies develop at different levels, don't freak out if you don't think your child is talking fast enough. From experience, it won't be long and you will be dreaming of the days when your little darling couldn't talk...lol.

I have seen babies as young as 10mo go at it but mine is one of the later ones. He is 18 mo. I was told that if he isnt saying a few things (mama, dadda, dog, cat, (basics) by then, he may need speech therapy. But then I have spoken to sooo many moms who say give it time....they will talk when they are ready.
Also peer groups and daycare settings seem to help.

Also if you feel that your child may need some help...try baby babble (its a video). It will teach you and your child basics to learning how to talk) Its aged 3-30 months. We just started using it and 1 week later he is up to 8 words.
Hope this helps!

My three sons: Andrew spoke early and often, about 15 months.
Sammy, the smartest of the three still says very little and he turned three yesterday (however, in his defense, his mother is native Japanese and he fluently understands both languages, just choses not to speak) Peter is more talkative but doesn't really say anything other than mom, dad, no, yes, bye. He is 17 months. (also half Japanese)

I started at 8 months, according to my mom. Children acquire almost all of their language skills between 12 and 30 months old, so look for it to begin around a year old.

My son started talking at 11 months..simple words and phrases...My daughter on the other hand didn't say a solid word until she was 18 months old. My 13 month old right now only says hi.
