I have worked with this man for a while now. I get very mixed messages from him. He remembers my birthday, notices changes (haircut, new clothes), tells me a I look nice in a certain color, things like that.
Once, I was in his office for a while discussing something ... after i returned to my office, he came in, sniffed me and asked what perfume I use. Said his office smells much better now since I was in it.
But then on other days he barely speaks to me. In general, he doesn't really talk to me about important things - keeps quiet about things going on in his life. When we go on company outings, sometimes he spends the entire time next to me other times he doesn't.
I'm incredibly shy and have tried to be as open with him as possible. He's a pretty quiet guy too. So I just don't know if I am reading more into the situation than I should?
How do I know how he feels and what do I do about it??

Hi (",)! i suggest finding a chance to ask him out for a casual lunch or dinner, and if he does have any feelings for you, i guess he would reciprocate by trying to ask you out for future dates.
Look for subtle body languages and whether he's interested in making the date works! You might have to spend a little more effort in finding a mutual common topic to chit-chat on your date so as to break the ice as you mention earlier that both of you are of the introvert kind and not reach a standstill where both of you feel awkward.
Try not to probe to much into his personal life at the start of your dating stage as he might not like to disclose some intimate personal details, this situation after some time should solve by itself as both of you draws closer to each other after some time.
Do not despair if he still doesn't take any action or show further commitment as he might still be considering whether you are his Missus "Right" as he might still be reeling from his past failed relationships.
Just to sum it up, you don't have to try too hard, Love have its own mysterious way of finding itself through the maze!

It sound's like he is interested but is shy, kinda like me. I know the guy is always supposed to ask the girl but you should be more aggressive in showing your interest. It sounds like he's coming half way but maybe your not giving enough to bring him all the way. However, if it's going to interfere with your job keep him as a friend.

Anyone who says little things like that sounds interested to me. Maybe he gets shy or frustrated and backs off at times - could be why he acts cool sometimes.

if he remembers your birthday that's wierd he's definetly has something on his mind.
But I got this problem where I tell people they smell good sometimes.
and if he tells you you look good in a certain color I don't think it's a big deal.- personal experience
but seriously though if he knows your birthday I think he likes you.

It is hard to tell. But from past experiences do not mix work and relastionships it never works!!
