Could be that your flooding RAM with too many software packages at boot up. Go into your start up folder and see what programmes you have that are booting when you turn on. Things such as Microsoft word usually boot when you start your PC and if your not a journalist then you may not need it to boot straight away, If too many programmes are loading RAM can`t handle all of them at the same time as it store info ready for the CPU so it doesn't have to go look for the programme when its needed. Another possibility maybe that you need to upgrade RAM (Random Access Memory), but don`t make rush decision`s just yet check out a few other leads and you may find what it is that's slowing the system down. You may also want to consider up-grading the system fully.. The website below will give you a Lil insight on how RAM or anything else you want to check works and it`s relationship with other PC components... Good luck...

My 4 years old PC booting XP for 2 minutes. I remember when it was brand new, it boot around 40 seconds. Now it loads with firewall, and a lot of windows update, and getting old too, so it took 2 minutes to boot.

Defragmenting disk increase boot time, and now can boot in 90 seconds. That was still too long wait. And when I analyzed, the most time taken for hard drive I/O.

Software solution:
1. Defragment your hard drive.
2. Uninstall applications which no longer needed.
3. Remove any theme and skin. Switch to classic mode.
4. If you have another hard drive, sets paging file to another harddrive.

Hardware solution:
1. Replace your harddrive with a better new one
2. Buy more memory

That's all.

I know am starting to sound repetitious, BUT, there are two powerful files on your PC that usually fix problems: Defrag and Clean Disk. After you run those two file, look into email and delete old and out of date emails. If you really want to keep print them and file somewhere. Look thru My Favorites and delete all those web pages you just had to save and check out last time you used. If used is zero and you don't access anymore, slash and burn or again print out. I never delete programs, but may zip and transfer large photos to CD. Check out My Docs. Are there some letters so old you forgot why you still have? print or delete. Now restart your computer and see if it loads faster. If still too slow for you, look at the garbage programs you just had to download. Be very care full here, do NOT delete any program your PC needs to run. And last but now least, check out your Start menu but do not delete anything until you go to "Help" menu. Better safe than sorry and I have been sorry before by changing things willy-Nilly. Caution is needed.
Good Luck

Sounds like you are loading too much at startup. Check the following:

PC Running Slow, Hangs, Freezes:

- Many users are not aware of how much RAM is used by wallpaper and/or a screensaver full of graphics. They run in the background and consume memory. (I have only 512mb RAM, run multiple programs simultaneously, and have set my wallpaper and screensaver to blank.)

I don’t do games, but I do know they are primarily graphics which need and use a lot of memory.

- How many programs do you load at startup? Maybe you should check it out and ensure you are running just what you need.
To do this: cl Start, cl Settings, cl Taskbar and Start Menu.
-cl Start Menu, cl Customize, cl Remove.
-cl the icon for the program you wish to remove
-then cl Remove.
-This will prevent the program from loading at startup, but will not remove the program from the hard disk.

-When you are working in a large file, save frequently to restore full memory access. (Your work remains in memory until you “save” it to disk.)

1.Did you run an error check? Open My Computer,
Right-cl on C:, Select Properties, Tools – Run an Error Check ( checkmark “check all and fix); then run a Defrag

2.Are you using Yahoo Toolbar? Run a full Norton Antispy.

3.From IE, click Tools, Internet Options
delete cookies
delete files (offline files)
clear history (set days to save to 0 if you want)
click o.k., and Restart

3.click Start, Programs, Accessories, System Tools – run Disk Cleanup

4.click Start, Run ipconfig renew (type ipconfig space renew)

All these things should be done regularly. The more frequently they are run, the less time they take.
-Note: Games and videos are mostly graphics. Graphics create large files. If this doesn’t help, you should consider getting more memory.

There are things you can do to make your computer restart in 5 seconds, but that is expensive (raid 0, low amount of startup processes). What you can do to speed things up is go to start>run>type msconfig, hit enter> go to startup tab, and uncheck all the startup processes that you dont need.. Also defrag your hard drive. The main reason why system slow down so much while shutting off/starting up is because all those startup processors that have to be loaded on top of all the drivers and system files. So when shutting off it has to close all of those processes too..

First, run your disc defragmenter and disc cleanup. Make sure you have good adware and spyware remover programs installed. Lavasoft, AVG, and Spybot are good - and free. Run these daily. Spyware and adware cookies can slow you down. Then if you have a lot of programs tied to your start menu and task bar that you don't absolutely need to have, remove them(if you don't know how, the Microsoft website will tell you how). Also, if your running redundant antivirus programs you might want to check to see if they're interfering with each other and slowing boot up time.

I too had the same trouble ,and did everything from adding more RAM to deleting the space consuming ,unwanted files from the PC.After all these failed I decided to reinstall my operating system(xp) into the PC ,and yes the system started working normally ,and also fast due to the extra RAM.It would also be a good idea to scan your system for virus.Try this ,hope it works.

go to start, then run - type in msconfig
click ok
it will open up your configuration
click on the STARTUP tab
all the things that are checked in that list, are what is booting up every time you turn your pc on or reboot it
you can go find a website that tells you which ones you need to keep checked and which ones that arent necessary........
for example........yahoo messenger, msnmessenger, quicktask, logitech.........are some that you can UNCHECK...........
the less you have checked, the faster you will boot up

also........go to START, then programs, then system tools and do a clean disk clean up. when that is done.....do a defragment

message me if you want help.
