I've already filled out and sent my 1040EZ with the w-2 from my current job. However, today I received a W-2 from a job I had at the beginning of 2006. I want to add this W-2 to what I've already sent in. Is there a way to do this? Should I contact the IRS and ask them to ignore what I just sent in?

You will need to file a 1040x - that is the amended tax return form. It will require you to fill in the numbers that you already sent it, which amounts change, and what the return should have said. I just did this last year, and I work for a tax service this year so if you have any questions you can email me.

Go to the www.irs.gov to download the form and instruction or you can probably get them at your local library. it will take 8 - 12 weeks to process the ammendment.

If you decide to do nothing---that is, not file an amended return-then eventually the IRS will catch it---they always get all the copies of your W2's so they will eventually find your error and contact you. It may take several months for them to do that, but they will send you a letter and then you will be responsible for paying any difference that you owe because of that additonal W2, if any. That same thing happened to us a year or two ago and we did not know you had to file an amended return, so a few months later the IRS sent us paperwork with the additonal W2 included in our AGI. If you owe, they will let you set up a payment plan at that point. It's probably better to just go ahead and file the amended return, although it does take them longer to process it, so if you were suppose to get a refund with the return you already filed, you will probably get it before they even process the amended return. You can't just call and tell them to ignore it---that will not work especially with all the millions of returns that they are processing---legally, they can't just delete it from the system once they receive it and start to process it just because a taxpayer calls them and says there is an error! They will just tell you to file an amended return as well.

You can not edit a return that has been filed, You need to complete form 1040X Amended Tax return to report the changes to your return. This must be mailed in along with any tax due if there is any owed on the 1040X. it takes 8 to 12 weeks to process

You MUST file an amended return using Form 1040X by April 17, 2007 and pay any tax due. That's the ONLY way to correct the problem.

You'll have to file an amended return on a form 1040X. The easiest way to do that is to prepare a correct 1040EZ, then lay that and the one you filed side by side, when preparing the 1040X.

Once a return is filed, you can't just ask them to ignore it.
