The theory is that they are masking their scent when they do this. Their goal is to smell more like their prey. I am clueless as to why my dog wants to hunt cow sh*t, which is what she rolls in every morning!

Dogs will also roll in the remains of other dead animals or anything else that stinks.

Isn't that great news?!?

yeah its a bummer but my dog also likes to roll in every smelly thing she comes upon, especially dead animals. this is because they evolved to have to hide themselves to hunt but if their prey got a whiff of them then they would scatter and the wild dogs would go without food for awhile until they could hunt again but if the prey just thought it was a carcass or a pile of crap near them then they would be less aware of the attack.

Easy:Dogs come from wolves. Wolves have the need to hunt and their smell has to blend in without attracting attention. It's their nature to want to smell. Basically, our dogs smell because their instincts tells them in order to survive, they gotta smell like crap.
