In my area, the girls went to an alternative school if they became pregnant. Part of it was that beginning motherhood would make it difficult to carry on a regular high school career, and part of it was that they didn't want the non-pregnant girls to see the pregnant girls and decide it was a good idea. Part of keeping us from having sex was to tell us how getting pregnant would ruin our lives. If we saw our pregnant classmates living lives that had changed and were different, but still living decent lives, what would stop us from running out and impregnating each other?

Actually, back in the 'old days', people were much much less open with relationships. What I'm trying to say is that public displays of affection were very uncommon and looked down upon, and what people thought of as 'going steady' was just kind of going out on dates and such. Back in those days people weren't as sexually open as they are today, and since more and more people at a younger age are having sex with their boyfriends or girlfriends then more people get pregnant now.

People were suspended back in the '80s for being pregnant (even though I TOTALLY think that the guy who gets the girl pregnant should have gotten suspended as well) because it was much more uncommon and it was kind of taboo. Also, the school did not want pregnant people attending school because they did not want it to seem like the school was allowing that to happen or encouraging it for other students.

Right now women are usually not suspended for being pregnant because teen pregnancy (I'm very sorry to say) rates have gone waay up from before. Also, since it is very common and since people have learned how to fight for their rights suspension rates are lower. Additionally, the schools probably don't have to worry about allowing it because way more teenagers have sex now than they ever did.

I still think that the guy who impregnates the girls hould also be suspended, because it is definitely unfair to only punish the girl simply because she biologically has no choice but to carry the baby (unless she gets an abortion) whereas the guy can go on and continue his life.

I hope that helps a lot. ^^

I was in high school in the late 70's, and they did NOT suspend girls for that.
