I'm sick of people saying it's not a disease. It's as much as of a disease as cancer is. This whole conflict started when I was on a website. The girl was saying that she hates alcholics. I got very offened because my step dad was an alcholic, I left comments in her comment box complaining about it.

So tell me.. Alcholism IS a disease, right?

S H,
My step dad DID get help. He went to rehab and a support group. You're born an alcoholic, as you are with cancer. People aren't like "Oh, I'm so cool, I'm an alcoholic!!" Alcoholism could've caused his death, but I really don't know.

Eventually, everyone will drink. But the thing is that alcoholics CAN NOT stop.

You're the only one so far with this oppinion. If being an alcoholic isn't a disease, then what is it then, hmm?

Alcoholism is a disease. My mom was an alcoholic, growing up was very difficult, I swore to myself I would never put my kids through what I went through. However, my oldest daughter is now an alcoholic. My family has a history of this disease.

Alcoholism is characterized by a preoccupation with alcohol and impaired control over alcohol intake. Alcoholism is a chronic, often progressive disease. Left untreated, alcoholism can be fatal.

Playing devils advocate, there is neurological scanning available showing the mid brain activity of an alcoholic is different to that of a non alcoholic. Traditionally AA, first developed the idea that alcoholism is a disease, based on the manifestation of a craving for more, once you have the first drink. A great deal of evidence is available to suggest it is a disease, but as far as I'm aware, there isn't a fully conclusive test, hence aa members needing to define for themselves. Http://www.alcohol-rehab.ltd.uk explain that 99% of rehabs globally work on the 12 step disease model... Why, because its what works. They also say that Alcoholism can be seen as a label that works well for some, but not so well for others. Ultimately, I guess it's what works for you right?

Alcoholism is a disease because it changes the way your body works. It effects your liver, heart, and your brain function. The problem though is that it is a preventable disease that becomes harder to prevent the longer the alcholic drinks.

@ S H above. Research has clearly demonstrated that there is a physical aspect to alcoholism as well as many other aspects to the syndrome. The biggest problem with alcoholics is their total inability to see they have a problem. I knew a Guy who was arrested again and again for drunk driving, who would often spend hours stood outside a Gas Station trying to buy cigerrettes on credit completely drunk. Wake up in Towns he had no idea how he got there, look out of his window in the mornings and report his automobile stolen, without any memory of drunkenly crashing his car and leaving it wrecked. The same Guy would insist he never had a drink problem.

You're sick of people saying it isn't because you hate hearing/reading the truth. It isn't a disease.....PERIOD.
You're bitter because your step father was an alcoholic and you hate the idea that he had a CHOICE to drink or not. It's easier for you to believe he could do nothing about it. Guess what, he could have done something about it.

Do you really believe people would CHOOSE to have cancer? Cancer and alcoholism are not the same. Cancer is not a choice. I don't choose to pick up a bottle or glass of cancer. People CHOOSE to pick up a bottle or glass of alcohol. They have the ability to turn away from it. They can say no. THEY CHOOSE NOT TO because they lack will power and discipline.

Alcoholism is a learned behavior and not hereditary. Children observe form their parents and believe it to be the proper method.

You can complain and leave all the comments you want but it doesn't erase your bitterness and denial to reality. Alcoholism is NOT a disease. Those who believe so are in denial, mostly because they have a loved one who is an alcoholic and it sucks to admit the truth that they have a choice.

OK....Let the negative ratings prevail.
