Because God is all powerful. He must have placed not only the stars, but also placed the light particles that spread from those stars. And of course, he put fake dinosaur fossils with the right ratio of Carbon isotopes so that they would appear old. That's the beauty of having an all powerful deity. Anything is possible. Science and Religion should NEVER mix.

The constant illogical apologies put forward for the Christian version of a God are inane at best. Any of the Gods are entities and intellects that live so far beyond our ken they have to take on aspects of near idiocy in their evolution for us to understand anything about them in our present evolution. Therefore, what they do, create, or say and their very appearance is a mystery that will not be solved for I doubt, at our present rate, if we will ever catch up. As a thought, anything traveling over the speed of light is infinite in size so the reverse would be anything infinite in size can travel over the speed of light and be here and at the edge of the universe at the same time---which is probably utterly wrong because I am just another human, like all others filled with ego and a need to be right.
Simply, we see what we can comprehend, we know what little we can understand. Nevertheless, debating the situation is quite enjoyable.

I think the answer to your question, and what God would want you to believe, is that an all-powerful being is capable of creating anything. Anything would include stars millions of light years away that we see with telescopes and dinosaur bones that we dig from the earth and consciousness from chemical reactions within our brains. When the Genesis creation story talks about creating the heavens, it doesn't specify where the stars are. It's also important to note that the creation story as it appears in Genesis comes from an oral tradition wherein the count of days is based upon what has been told from one generation to the next. The purpose of "days" is to create an organizational structure to the creation process. At the very least, this is my best answer to your question.

The Genesis creation myths are based on the idea that the stars resided on a bowel that formed the sky. Even the hebrew words for heavenly bodies are rooted from the same word as bowl in hebrew. This is part of the very obvious parallels between the first Genesis creation myth and that of Egyptian and Babylonian creation myths.

Some creationists will tell you that God placed the light from those stars in space as if they had been traveling all those years. A few will say that the speed of light has been slowing down ever since creation.
I say those people are filled with a large amount of a disgusting brown semi-solid substance that has been evacuated from the intestinal tract of a sexually functional male bovine.

Who are we to say they were not created millions of years before God formed the earth?
In the beginning the earth was without form. Doesn't say how long it was hanging in the solar system before God decided to form the earth and create Adam from the dirt.
How do we really know what a light year is? It was mere man who came up with that equation, was it not? Which scientist stakes claim to coming up with what a light years is?

You forget that God is not limited by time or space. He is so powerful he could have created it all at once. Just because your eyes cannot see the light of said stars for 4.22 light years does not mean that he did not create them all at the same time. He created them. You just weren't there 4.22 years later to see them. Were You? If you were, let me know. for encouragement, listen to ttb.org

He is tricksy!
Here hon, you can borrow my bible literalist decoder ring. It's very difficult to navigate without one. Sometimes, one verse will be "literal" and the VERY NEXT verse will be a metaphor. That's happening in your case. The bible verses that say "day" really means "1 literal day" but then when you get to making stars, in the next verse, that's a metaphor or magic, take your pick.
And if that doesn't work, there's always the threat of hell.
Very good question tho. It was questions like those that helped me to rethink christianity.

the story is not meant to be taken literally. it's a metaphor for the way we must make sure everything is in place and begin anew each time we start our spiritual journey. that is why it is the first story in the torah and it is found in many other cultures as well.
in other words, a man with no food or shelter needs to attend to those things before he can open his mind to learning about his god, otherwise he'll be too worried about the other stuff to concentrate (rest). also god is a metaphor for self, how if we don't start over completely, symbolically begin as new every time we learn something, we will end up skipping over important stuff that might add to our knowledge because we've already "heard it before".

I understand your point, but I don't think this example would be "cheating".
All God would have to do is also create light that is already in transit.
The think about Omnipotence is that there are no limits, He could also have created the stars already old. The second they existed, they would be thousands of years old. This would be kind of like cheating, but when you make the rules, you get to say what is and is not allowed.
