I have a friend that will lick the plate clean...no kidding..in public! He has also repeatedly asked for "samples" from other peoples dessert dishes..even after he has finished his own, and will also keep eating their desserts...(the good friends, are too polite to try and stop him!) he will also ask "Hey, are you going to eat the rest of that ?"(meaning the dessert dish, that they may be slowly eating!!!) What is going on with this fellow? Why is he like this? Why would anybody be like this? Did he miss a lesson, somewhere down the line...or is this deliberate?!?

extra things...he grew up in a good family...everybody is close...his family ate family dinners and other meals together..they are a rather old fashioned family...they, are close knit, they grew up doing things for their parents..and still help, as well, to this day. The mother was very insistant that her two children,(my friend, and his only other sibling..his sister) got married...(this was before she passed away) she was so insistant, that she would also try to get her daughter to buy a house right across the street from the family home(but, the daughter ,and her hubby didn't want to...and they live in another town, but, still visit her family alot, anyways!)

The son, my friend, his marriage fell apart ,right around the time his mother fell ill,and later passed away. He is rather set in his ways. I can't always figure him out...as he once described his wife to be,as somebody who was shy...and she honestly wasn't!! LOL!

The word for what you have witnessed is gluttony. I have a friend who struggles with it as well. It is a way of thinking. Your friend probably knows what's going on, just not the effect it has on others. I can guarantee you he is thinking about your food even while he has his own. Avoiding eating out wouldn't help him. Talking about his effect on others will.

I think he might have had an impoverished childhood and the lack of food could have been a serious issue for him then. What happens with most people who grew up hungry, so to speak, is that they learn not to waste food, but they are so extreme with not wasting that they do the above. Some others would have a habit of hoarding food. My brother-in-law's mom is a food hoarder and whenever she goes to a buffett or potluck, she has the habit of taking as hoarding as much food into her handbag and plastic bags and she is 62 years old.

LOLOL, this is hilarious:
I'll make an admission of guilt here: I do stuff like this to ensure I'll never be with this person again! ie: the date from Hell !

as for your friend........... maybe he spent just a little too much time with the family dog as a kid !

Seriously, perhaps he came from a large family where they ate in communal fashion and a meal was pure caloric intake, not a social event.

There is really no telling why he is like this. To find the answer, you'll have to ask him, not us on Answers! However, why hasn't anyone let him know that this behavior is very unacceptable in public? As much as I might like someone, I would never tolerate this kind of behavior, and I am completely bumfuzzled as to why you do.

you sound as if he is a good friend, are you close enough that you could address these issue's? maybe he doesn't realise its bad manners if he did this while growing up. you could say in a nice way 'please don't lick your plate, I'm embarrassed'. or try ' if you want a sample, why don't you order something else for yourself'? good luck
