A good bottle of wine ($20 and up) is always appreciated by the host. However if you know for sure they don't drink alcohol, flower bouquet or fruit basket will be better.

I don't know in America, but in France, when you're invited to dinner, you bring a bunch of flowers or a bottle of wine.

We always bring several desserts. Pies, cakes, cookies etc... And if there are kids in the family, we always bring a galloon of chocolate milk. It's a real treat for the little ones.
