My dog has suddenly started using the bathroom in the basement and I need to know what we can do. I can let him out and he will go relieve himself, come in and go downstairs and urinate on the floor. What can I do and what is causing it? We havent made any changes to our lives. We have a cat but have had her for 6 years and my son has a dog who we watch every so often, but he has had her for over 2 years now. I can't figure out why the dog is doing this all of a sudden!!!!

You should take your dog to the vet for a once over. This is often a symptom of underlying medical problems. At the very least, eliminate that as a possibility.

You should talk with your vet and make sure there isn't any medical problems with your dog. But for now I would put a baby gate up so your dog can't go down stairs to use the restroom.

I would definitely check with your vet on this one to ensure there is not an underlying medical condition. One thing you may try is to eliminate your dog's access to this area, assuming this is the only place he's doing this. We use a baby gate for the time being to keep our dogs out of our basement during remodel. Too many things they could potentially get injured on for us to allow them down there unsupervised.

Is your dog crate trained? If so, put them back in the crate and see if they still have an accident so you can tell if it behavioral or medical. If they do, could be a urinary tract infection and possibly (but hopefully not) signs of incontinence. Your vet will be able to tell pretty quickly.
