It isn't very common, for the population as a whole. Even the expanded no tap monitoring was of incoming and out going international calls. How many of us make those on a regular basis?

Also if it was common you would here more tapped telephone calls being entered into evidence in major crime cases. Once admitted in court they are public record. Since you don't hear this very often I have to assume that it doesn't even happen all that often for people suspected of crimes.

If you are in the mofia, or drug running, or operating a gambling ring or something like that, i am sure the probability that your line is being tapped is considerably higher then the population as a whole.

In Canada this is rare as the warrant required to get this type of tap are difficult to get. Because they infringe so much on a person's privacy the police don't usually get them unless it is a fairly serious matter.

That is the easiest way of getting to know what is going on in the community...If you are that worried about it and are a true criminal than you can get a scrambler..But I would suggest just not being a criminal. They record hours of phone conversations to present evidence to a grand jury or judge. Look at Gotti,he talked about killing people on phone lines. If they didnt have him bugged than there would still be senseless murders going on. I dont think that corrupt people in law enforcement should have access to phone conversations though...Because of the fact that they are criminals themselves..

If they are tapping your phone line....they KNOW you are on the computer! Disconnect before you say too much!

Also if you wear a tin foil hat it defelect the sound waves so the police can't hear what your saying....and neither can the aliens! Double bonus!

Probably depends on a persons life style. There is no need to tap most phones unless there is a reason.

I think that what they do is have a device that picks up on certain words and if you are using these words then your phone is more likely to actually get tapped.

You'd be surprised. It has been common for a long time! Even way before the terrorists became their reason.
