I have a 5 month domestic shorthair kitten who used to "cry" all the time. She meowed when I talked to her as if in conversation and meowed when she wanted to play, etc. We just had our 2 kittens spayed, and now she doesn't meow anymore. She opens her mouth as if to meow, but nothing comes out. She seems to be acting like normal otherwise. Our other kitten's meow seems the same as before the surgery. Any thoughts?

He is meowing. 30% of cats meows are too highpitched to be heard by humans. So he is meowing, just to high for you to hear. Another thing is he may have gotten a kitty cold, they sometimes lose their voices when they get those.

I have heard of this before. There is a disorder when a cat loses its meow. There are a few rare cases when a cat is born without this ability. Since your cat used to meow and now does not, we know that something has occurred. Take the cat to the vet and see what he/she has to say.

Go to the library and look up books on cats or go to official cat websites like for cat food. There was this really good website that I used to use that was from a company like that... I am going to try to find it and come back. You may want to look around along those lines.

I hope this helps!

P.S. Back! I found the site that I was looking for. It is called CatAge. Very good information there. You may want to check it out.

my cat when he was a kitten used to just open his mouth and nothing came out, then I took him to the vet and boy he learned to meow after he got his first shots.

He is 9 now and is very vocal when something is on his feline mind.

It might be nothing: Our cats used to be quite loud when they were kittens, but now 'whisper'.

Thats a tough call. Maybe call your vet and see what he or she has to say.
