I found out my jar of peanut butter is being recalled for Salmonella. I haven't opened it. Do you think I can get my money back for it?

You're right. I haven't been watching the news. I work 14-hour days giving me just enough time to sleep.

If you still have your receipt you will get a refund without any questions asked. If you have not, the shop might only offer you a replacement. I have taken back a product that was on recall and I was asked for proof of purchase as "it could have been stolen, or bought from elsewhere" (Their exact words). I had thrown that particular week's shopping receipt away as it was more than three weeks old, so could not produce it. They replaced the product with an identical one bearing a different batch number.

However you can but try, the shop where you bought it may be less fussy about refunds and agree to give your money back. After all a jar of peanut butter would not dent their profits, but it is hassle for them even if the manufacturer refunds them. I agree that they should refund you and there was a supermarket that refunded AND replaced an unsatisfactory product. It has now been taken over and the policy has been scrapped.
I am just telling you what happened to me so that you know what you may face if you go to the same chain as I do. Good luck!

Certainly you can and should.
Your contract is with the shop from where it was purchased and they have a legal obligation to refund you in full on the grounds that what you purchased was unfit for the purpose they sold it to you.
