Try the Gayatri Mantra, it is in praise of the supreme, and not one God or Goddess in general. The Gayatri Mantra is a highly revered mantra in Hinduism, second only to the mantra Om. It consists of a formula taken from the Yajurveda, and the verse 3.62.10 of the Rigveda (which is an example of the Gayatri meter). Since all the other three Vedas contain much material rearranged from the Rig Veda, the Gayatri mantra is found in all the four Vedas.
By many Hindus, the Gayatri is seen as a Divine awakening of the mind and soul, and within it a way to reach the most Supreme form of existence, and the way to Union with Brahman. Understanding, and purely loving the essence of the Gayatri Mantra is seen by many to be one, if not the most powerful ways to attain God.
The Mantra goes like this: Om bhūr bhuva svaha, tát savitúr váreniya, bhárgo devásya dhīmahi, dhíyo yó na pracodáyāt.
Translation: om The sacred sound, bhū 'earth', Bhuvas 'atmosphere', svaha 'light, heaven, space', tat 'that'
savitúr of Savitr the god', varenyam 'Fit to be worshipped'
bhargo 'Glory Effulgence', devasya 'of God', dhīmahi 'may we attain', dhíya yo na 'our prayers' and na enclitic personal pronoun) , pracodáyāt 'who may stimulate' ..
Gayatri is also known as the Mother of all Mantras.

I usually chant the Maha Mantra:
Hare Krishna Hare Krishna
Krishna Krishna Hare Hare
Hare Rama Hare Rama
Rama Rama Hare Hare
However, in terms of a mantra that doesn't really personify any one deity per se, the Gayatri Mantra is a good example of that.
Om Bhur Bhuva Swaha
Tatsavitur Varenyam
Bhargo Devasya Dimahi
Diyoyoh Na Prachodayat
Really so long as you stick to one mantra though, you will be glorifiying God as the Supreme spirit as you see Him. Since you worship Lord Shiva, Om Nama Shivaya is as good as any other mantra whether it praises another deity, or praises God without any references to other deities.
Hope this helps.

No mantra would be recited without initiation via and guidance of Guru. A mantra ability that's recited with the Pranav. you are able to recite any element without initiation from Guru, without reciting Pranav. even though it has free of charge and means. yet "Vishnu Sahasranaama" is one element which needs no guru or regulations. you are able to your self commence up, recite the Sahasranama, sitting, status, walking, mendacity, snoozing, bathing, cleansing or maybe defusing. it relatively is beneficial mantra which ingredients potential, means, bravery and stable to the reciter. Shri. Adi Shankaracharya mentioned, "Geyam Geeta Naama Sahasram" meaning recite Geeta and Vishnu Sahasranaama, for attainment of Moksha.

The Rig-veda is an ancient Hindu religious book from the Indian subcontinent, that is a collection of Vedic Sanskrit hymns dedicated to Rigvedic deities. It is counted among the four Hindu sacred texts (shruti) known as the Vedas.

Mantras are repetetive words or chants that heighten your meditation. They are not prayers.
In your case, Om namah Shivaya would be your mantra.
If I may advise you, since I'm not a Hindu, but do know a lot about it, sticking to one mantra in meditation is the recommended thing; simply because the achieving of Bliss with even one mantra takes years and years of tapasya! So learn to master the first mantra, first!
All the best!
Cheers!

There are sevaral ways you can praise him, you could chant his 109 names. Read the Shiva Arti, Shiva Chalisa, Shiva Puran for more knowledge.
You could also recite the tandava stotra, this was something written by Ravana to please Shiva, however it is pretty complex.
