If you believe in the Bible (which I don't) then it's the chicken. Even without religion, how can an egg be created and hatched without the chicken? So I say chicken.

Probably neither.. Probably a creature different to a checken laid an egg one day and it hatched as the first chicken (evolution).

But also perhaps amino acids, proteins, minerals etc joined in the ground and made a hard outer casing (shell).. then perhaps the inner proteins amino acids etc etc incubated in the warmth of the mud and then one day a creature hatched out....
