BTL stands for Below-The-Line. In Marketing Communications, "The Line" was used to differentiate the difference between mass communications (Above-The-Line) and one-to-one communications. (Below-The-Line).

Above-The-Line (ATL) is usually expensive as it reaches the masses via mainly media buys in the press and magazines, radio, television and Internet. Below-The-Line will consist of collateral, direct marketing, customer relations management, which is mainly one-to-one communication and a little cheaper in terms of production and project management.

BTL is especially useful if you have complex product information which requires information sheets and flyers for customers to take home and process. It is very good for localised, tactical promotions when you don't need mass broadcast communications for a small roadshow in a suburb. BTL will do the trick.

Hope this helps. Cheers!

Is is BTL? In which case it "below the line" - opposite of above the line which is marketing phrase for general stuff like advertising that reaches all (so direct mail would be below the line)
