I have a miniature red poodle who is very aggressive. He always bites and we think it is because we are not walking him long enough. He is 6 years of age. How long should I walk my dog?

Four periods of exercise daily, totalling 80 minutes. Poodles are an active breed, requiring regular exercise. As your dog reaches its older years, cardiovascular exercise will be necessary to maintain heart health.

It depends on how healthy your dog is and how much stamina he has. If you haven't walked him much in the past then work up to longer walks. It's the same for a human who hasn't exercised much - take it easy in the beginning - especially if your dog is at all overweight. Generally it's good to walk a little one like that at least 15-20 minutes twice a day. If he's healthy and you can keep a good pace then watch for signs of fatigue - excessive panting, slowing down, etc. Aggression is not necessarily related to lack of walks though certainly a dog needs at least two long walks a day and a tired dog is a happy dog. Teach your dog basic obedience - sit, down, stay - establish yourself as 'top dog' - correct any sign of aggression promptly with a stern "NO!" Really it would be best to seek the advice of a good trainer to help you. One session with a trainer can give you specific pointers for your individual dog and your family members who are involved with him. It will be worth the money.

For as long as he wants, that is if you have the time.
