It wasn't just our tiny planet God created. He created the whole universe and everything in it in 6 days. On the seventh day He rested. Plus, it wasn't just the Father Who created everything. Father, Son, and Holy Spirit created the whole universe. Like it says in John 1, Colossians 1 starting at verse 15 it talks about Jesus' role in creating. In Genesis 1:2 it talks about the Spirit of God hovering over the waters.
Another way to look at it is not only did God "rest" on the seventh day, His work was complete for creating the universe and everything in it. It was also an example for the Jews to rest one day of the week and work the rest, because no one can work everyday. They need a day of rest or else they get burned out.

`I don't think about it like "Gee, I'm tired! I gotta rest now!". Obviously if God became tired, He wouldn't be God, would He?

I believe it was more like He took a step back and took time to enjoy what He had created. Kind of like you do after you finish a painting or a new set of steps on your porch.

I also believe that He did so as an example to us, who are human and do need to take physical and emotional breaks. I believe taking a day out of the week to rest and reflect is an essential part of healthy living.

Being almighty, God does not need to rest the way humans do. His resting just meant he stopped creating things in relations to the earth. Jehovah continues to work. At John 5;17, Jesus said: "My Father has KEPT WORKING until now, and I keep working."

Jehovah created more than our tiny planet. He created the immense universe.

Because the people who wrote the bible thousands of years ago didn't have any concept of how terribly insignificant the earth is compared to the rest of the universe so they thought it must have been a huge job and therefore included the "resting" part in their story. It made sense at the time...

God did not have to rest. God does all things as an example to us. We are likewise to work for 6 days and have a day of rest.

God rested for our sake to give us a day of rest. God did not need it, it was all done out of love for us. God Bless

He created the universe. And the day of rest was created for us, he was giving us a pattern to emulate

Because he's tired. Imagine you were given a pile of work. Of course you will rest after doing it right? Besides, he's not resting now. He's back to work helping and watching over all of us.

well, god didn't rest AFTER the creation, he rested DURING. He just made a single-celled organism and let the big bang happen, you know.

In this case I think that the term rest can mean completion.
