The actual fleas only live a few days, it's the eggs which are 99% of the problem. They can live in carpets and bedding for months before hatching out and finding a suitable host. You can buy spray for carpets which kills the fleas and also use Frontline Combo or Program on your cat/dog, which stops the flea eggs hatching on them.

it's not how long they live that's the problem, it's how long their eggs can lie dormant then hatch, if your cat has fleas it needs treated, try FRONTLINE it's easy to use, you'll also have to spray your house especially carpets and in corners as eggs can lie dormant for up to a year and then hatch so i suggest spraying again after six months so this doesn't happen, also wash your clothes and bedding etc. Good luck
