On most ashtrays, there's a little tongue-thingy where you are supposed to put out your cigarettes. You have to press that thing down and release the entire ashtray. Once it's released, you can look at the side to see if there are any tracks that must be engaged in order to remove/restore it to its original position. When all esle fails, leave it in place and use a vacuum to suck out the ashes!
