They will always try to work with you before sending your info to a credit bureau. Think about it, once they do they loose at least 30% off the top. Call the business office at the hospital and tell them you cannot afford to pay this bill in full and ask to set up payment arrangements. If you can't get anywhere with them, tell them you want to speak to a manager.

I'm curious though as to why you insurance would not cover your ER visit. That's unusual.

I am not surprised that your company did not cover the claim. The first step is to find out why not. If it is because they feel that it was not an emergency. If it is because you just don't have ER visits (way out there). If the provider billed in error. Speak to your insurance company and find out the reason. They will tell you how it denied. If there is any sort of medical reason or if there is a coding issue (ie location, procedure, diagnosis) then they will advise you to contact the ER since they can not tell you without violating HIPAA laws.

Now if it was not covered because your insurance company feels that it was not an emergency what you will need to do is write/fax in an appeal to your insurance stating why you feel that it was an emergency and basically plead your case. You need to understand that the doctors in the er may not have submitted anything other than a claim showing a ER/urgent care visit. Good luck and let me know if I can be of any help. My e-mail is available.

Kathryn,

Speak with the billing office. They have "free bed" programs that will help pay this bill. Of course, you will have to qualify for a program like this. It will depend on your income. They may think you can pay based on your income, even if you don't think so.

If that doesn't work, offer to make a payment arrangement with them. They will allow you to make monthly payments until the bill is paid.

After that, you might want to consider looking into a more comprehensive insurance plan. If yours doesn't cover Emergency Room visits, you can do better

You need to call the billing office, and work out a payment schedule with them. They are usually very willing to do that, as the alternative is not getting anything at all.

They always ask for full payment. Try calling the billing office (number should be on the bill) and ask them if you send them $X now (whatever you can afford) and $x a month - is that acceptable? They should agree. If they don't - ask for a supervisor.

That's one good reason why it sucks to live in the USA. I can go to the ER here in Canada, and it will cost me nothing!
