I'm not listing any of New York's upscale restaurants, because I don't think a single diner would be very comfortable there. If I were dining alone, I'd want to feel free to read a book until my food was served; I wouldn't feel comfortable doing that at Le Bernadin. So, my suggestions are places with good food , no strict dress codes, places where I'd feel comforable dining alone.

Near Union Square: Via Emilia on East 21st Street and Park Avenue. Appetizers are unusual and outstanding - gnocco fritto - large platter of Italian coldcuts served with delicious little fritters; tigelle (not served in too many places) hot biscuits with proscuitto and melted cheese; wonderful soups, good pastas, fish is always fresh. Some desserts are outstanding.

In the West Village: Da Andrea on Hudson Street and West 11th Street.
Excellent pastas - I especially love their clam sauce, they, too, make tigelle, can get very crowded on weekends.

The Little Owl on Bedford and Grove in the Village - small, comfortable, the owner actually does the cooking and the food is outstanding. (By the way, The Little Owl is in the building that was used in "Friends".)

The Brass Monkey on Little West 12th Street and Washington in the West Village. Irish pub food, very good fish and chips and crab cakes. Lively, comfortable place

AOC Bedford on Bedford near Downing in the Village. Excellent food, the prettiest octopus appetizer (delicious) and they make the crepe suzettes at your table. Very nice wait staff.

Hmm...wish you would have elaborated more on what a dreadful table was. I work in a restaurant. We have several tables that seat just two people (nearly half the store), and when a single person comes in, the host will usually seat them in one of those tables. Reason being is so that the bigger tables are still available. Now, if you would like a big table or different table, just ask. You will be granted your desires (at least I hope so). And to address the restaurant being only 1/4 full. At times, there are only so many servers on the floor with only part of the restaurant actually being open. Meaning, not all tables (which add up to sections/stations, in server world ) have a server for them. So maybe you went in at a slow time, and this is what was going on. But, where I work, if someone wants a table outside of an open section, they just have a server pick that table up. No big deal. I'm sorry this is happening to you. Just be specific as to where you would like to sit. Could just be a coincidence....I've heard repeat customers come in and say they always get the same booth. They're not mad, just mentioning how it seems to always happen. I dine out alone a lot. Can't really recall getting crappy tables. I can recall getting crappy service, however.
