check if you have auto-hide set. You can try this by clicking the Windows key (the key near your left Ctrl Button on your keyboard. Once you see the taskbar and start button, right click on taskbar and check under properties, if the auto-hide option is enabled.

If none of the above works, ur explorer might have had an "abend". Try bringing up task manager (by Ctrl-Alt-Del if u r using XP Home edition or Ctrl-Alt-Del and select Task manager if u use prof edition) and select File -> New task -> type explorer and hit enter. u must now be able to see ur start menu and taskbar.

The easy answer would be if the entire toolbar at the bottom disappears. If you see a blue line at the bottom, roll your mouse over it and wait for a up/down arrow cursor - click and hold move the mouse up and the task bar should restore. Then you can right-click on the task bar and lock it - so it doesn't disappear again.

Sometimes it gets shrunk down. If this is what happened you can fix it by clicking the mouse on the very bottom of the desktop (there might be a blue line there) and dragging it up.

I think you must accidentally hid the taskbar (in the bottom of the screen). Just move your cursor (mouse) to the bottom of the screen, the cursor will than change the shape, then hit mouse left button and pull it up, you can bring the taskbar back (includes your start button) to your screen.

Windows explorer crashing can remove the entire taskbar.

Low memory (including a full swapfile) can cause the start button and other graphical elements not to be displayed.

You should increase the size of your swapfile (if you have it fixed) or defrag your drive and use a fixed-size swapfile if it is dynamic.

i don't think it's missing. it sounds like the task bar is just on autohide, meaning if you're mouse pointer isn't on the bottom of the screen it goes away. just move your mouse around on the bottom of the screen and it should pop up. then right click on it. choose properties and uncheck the "autohide the taskbar" box and click ok.
