I agree with Md_gal that a specialist's personal examination and evaluation is important. The question is, how severe is her chronic renal failure and what is the etiology of her disease as well as what are her symptoms. The reason people need dialysis or a transplant is when problems are associated with the kidney dysfunction: fluid overload, hyperkalemia, uremic encephalopathy, etc. It's possible that if her creatinine is high but stable, and that she can use medication to control all these other problems, that she may remain off dialysis or transplant.

Unfortunately, yes if it is end-stage renal failure.
However, if it is chronic renal failure and creatinine levels can be maintained with diet-restrictions and control of secondary causes like BP, Diabetes Mellitus etc. than the above 2 can be delayed and even avoided altogether.
Luckily,nowadays there is an alternative method of dialysis--Ambulatory Peritoneal Dialysis which can be carried out at home and though a bit more expensive will not require her to go to hospital very often, as of now if she is on artificial kidney dialysis (AKD),already.

That's a tough Q to answer here without knowing her entire history.
You should seriously be asking this Q to her 'nephrologist'.
I have personally known many patients and family members who have undergone renal transplant and are living a more fulfilling life.
*Obviously, if it was recommended by an MD that she get dialysis....it means that she has a lot of 'toxic' build-up which can only be removed by dialysis and further transplant.

Not sure where you live but if you are in the Chicago area. I would suggest a trip to University of Chicago Nephrology department. My mother was ready for dialysis by a local doctor when we sought another opinion by this hospital. Her kidneys actually improved under their care. That was 3 years ago. Good luck!

Unfortunately, no. It's likely that her kidneys will get to the point of not filtering out the poisons and not getting rid of excess water.

Talk to your nephrologist. Also, consider a tour of a dialysis unit.
