Saints are "set aside ones" meaning they were justified before the foundation or beginning of this world age. Look at Paul for example. As Saul of Tarsus he persecuted the church. Then on his way to Damascus Christ interfered with his free will and explained to him he was a "chosen vessel".

Saints do not choose to be saints. They are chosen and set aside to accomplish the work of God according to God's choosing. They are the elect.

Saints are those who took the message of Christ really to heart and lived it as closely as they could even though they had to endure great hardships, they realized that this life passes quickly for everyone and that what we do here determines our eternal life.
They also realized that material possessions and desires hold back spiritual advancement and hinder the life of God within, they took seriously what Christ said,` He who loves his life in this world will lose it`, and `What does it profit a man to gain the whole world yet lose his very soul`.
