I'm looking at buying a 2007 Jeep Commander and have been doing some research on all of the available options. I checked out the SRT8 Family which includes the Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8 with the 6.1 liter, 420 HP Hemi engine. (insert Tim, the tool man, Allen grunt).
Why don't they put it in the Commander?

Ok, I wasn't on a quest for opinions about the body style here. I can form my own opinions on asthetics. I was looking for insight or educated guesses on why they can offer the 6.1 Hemi in the Grand Chrokee, but not the Commander. So the argument that the unibody construction is too week to handle the torque doesn't hold water. And the comments on fuel efficiency, while taken under consideration, also don't address the root question. After all, if they've already produced the engine for other models, fuel efficiency clearly wasn't the primary consideration.

It's mainly because of lack of interest....as the commander and grand cherokee are built on the same platform it would be a simple change but the comander has been a big disappointment saleswise so they just don't want to waste anymore .

The Commander is going to be dropped in 2009 due to the lack of sales.
Chrysler Isn't going to try to improve it if the public shows no interest in the auto.

Maybe because the second generation "Yuppie Jeep" is not selling well and because maybe IT WON'T FIT!
Besides the thing gets crappy fuel mileage already and the thing is top heavy unlike the Grand Cherokee.

maybe because that ugly thing called Commander, is not that popular, therefore, nobody will buy a $40,000 commander. Plus it has a box design, so it doesn't go with the style.

All good answers. I think one of the biggest factors is that the Commander is a unibody and can't handle the weight and the torque of that enigine. Besides it's "Butt-Ugly"

IN MY PERSONAL OPINION,IT'S AWASTE OF TIME AND MONEY.IT'S TO DARN HEAVY AND HAVE VERY POOR AERODYNAMICS.LOOK AT THE CAR IT'S ABRICK ON WHEELS.AL OF THE GUYS AT WORK LAUGHS AT IT.IT'S BETTER OF ON A GRAND CHEROKEE.YOU CAN ALWAYS HAVE YOUR COMMANDER CUSTOMIZE IF YOU CAN AFFORD IT.
