Yes, you can use Visa debit card at atms and at merchants that take Visa. If you do use your card at an atm, try finding one that will not eat your card. Since it is a Visa Debit. You can choose primary credit instead of primary checking to withdraw money from your account. The primary checking will work if your card has any of these logos Visa plus, Maestro, Cirrus or interlink. Either method comes out of your account immediately.
When using the card at stores. Make sure you choose the credit button and you sign for your purchase. If your card has a Visa plus or Interlink or a maestro symbol it can work at some merchants by hitting the debit/atm button and entering your pin and at some merchants you can get cash back using the pin method.
You might need to activate your card for purchase outside of your country and also tell the bank when & where you will be going and how long you will be gone.
Just for info here is the current exchange rate
10.00 USD = 5.14143 GBP
You will usally get charged a foregin transation fee for each transaction. This will not be shown on your receipt(s)

Should be no problem at all. Check with your bank regarding fees, because there will no doubt be fees from your bank and from the ATM.
I would suggest using a credit card while here for as many purchases as possible, and only use cash if you have to. Almost everywhere takes Visa or Mastercard here in the US so you should rarely have to use cash. Heck, you can even use your credit card at fast food places these days!

Yes they can. Note, however, that Nationwide Building Society is the only financial establishment in the UK not to charge its customers for usage of its Visa debit cards outside of the boundaries of the UK. Every other issuer will charge you a foreign transaction fee (generally £1.50 - £3.00 per transaction) and adjust the rate of exchange (generally by around 2.5%) between the foreign currency and Sterling in its favour as commission.

yes they can be used, but you'll be charged quite a bit by your bank, so don't use them.
I use my credit card as i get a very good exchange rate and also insurance. worth thinking about rather than a debit card.
