Labs are very easy to take care of. This is due to their intelligence.
They are wonderful dogs.

I have 2 black labs (the color doesn't make a difference) my oldest I got as a pup and my other one i just adopted. Neither is alike. The one I have had since a baby was an awful puppy, he ate threw my wall, and even to this day is still as active as he was when he was 3 months old he will be 3 tomorrow. The one i adopted is about a 1 1/2 and he is very laid back no problems so far. Every dog is different it is hard to tell you exactly how much work the dog will be for you. Take it to an obediance class to help with the training and make sure he gets enough excersise. Labs can get over weight fast if they don't get enough excersise.

1. Plan basic training for commands you'll need (sit, stay, down, then directions and terms specific to where you live/want the dog to go - "[instert dog's name], living room!" would be one example). Labs are great - quite smart; this shouldn't take long.

2. Labs are typically friendly, so anger issues aren't usually a big deal, but be careful when around other dogs. If labs are the 'big dog,' they may be confused when a small dog is unfriendly.

3. Labs do need to stretch out and be encouraged to use energy. PLAN it to make it EASY - pre-plan a routine with exercise; encourage time in the yard if you have one - or in a park, where you can play. Some labs enjoy games; others become bored.

4. Toys: beware - labs tend to go through standard toys fast; most of the 'durable' toys aren't 'durable' enough. If you're lucky, a kong toy will be helpful.

5. Chewing and other bad habits: Get a crate. Labs are not only smart but sensitive. It won't take 'em long to be part of the family, and you'll enjoy having a lab sit with you while you read, chat, whatever. But they do get bored, so a crate's a good place (a 'bedroom' to which they may wish to retreat at times) to have a lab stay if you must be gone/must 'turn your back' for a while. Why? Your smart lab is smart enough to quietly go on a recon mission for your remote control and have it chewed to bits in seconds; your smart lab is smart enough to go after any snacks you might accidentally leave within smelling distance (and they have great noses).

5. Be sure you set oundaries and reinforce them, but don't be shocked if the limits are tested. Our beautiful lab is 5, smart, sweet, and still sneaky if the opportunity arises.

6. If your lab finagles the crate hinges off (ours did as a pup - we'd leave and come home to find her out and much of the house destroyed), you can reinforce loose areas with tiny padlocks (typically only necessary on the back of the crate).

7. ENJOY your lab. Labs are little work compared to some pets, lots of work compared to others. But they are soooo smart, sooooo sweet --- this is an opportunity, not a tragedy.

Best wishes. And don't forget shots and flea treatments, 'k?

I worked in a veterinary office and I'll tell you that any Lab is not easy when they are young. they are great dogs though. Are you cage training him/her??? That is a good start. they like to chew so try getting a spray like bitter yuck. You can spray it on furniture and wood etc. Sometimes it works sometimes it doesn't! Also obedience school is a good thing to enroll him/her in. Get him/her chew toys and some stuffed animals, but make sure the eyes are sewn not button. I hope some of this helps you, Congratulations on getting your dog! Labs are wonderful, loyal, obedient dogs! Enjoy!

puppy? They need lots of exercise. Let them play in the yard - don't keep them couped up in the house. Take him for a walk everyday. If you don't get the energy out of him, then he will be bored and he will tear stuff up. He'll start with small stuff and then move on to bigger stuff (like the couch!). They are great dogs, but are still in puppy mode until they are almost 3 years old.

Labs are notorious for their endless energy. The NUMBER ONE most important thing to do is to setup an exercise routine and STICK TO IT!!! Your dog will love you for it. About an hour or so a day on a walk will do it. Also, if you want a shiny coat, I recommend Iams/Eukanuba food...I tried Hills/Science Diet and my dog's coat wasn't shiny and she had gas a lot.

I had a black and a yellow, so they are the same....They are very easy to take care of...they love to be with you, they are not a dog to tie outside by itself....They don't eat a great deal, and they LOVE the water, so take it swimming when you can...They are members of the sporting group, so they love, as their name says to retrieve, play ball with it, frisbee, etc....I loved my labs..soooo much, be good to it, and it will come back at you 100 fold!!!!

choclate labs tend to be very hyper dogs and alot of them are chewers. So i would be careful about leaving it in the house alone.
