Although you can buy sesame seeds, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds and the like to eat from supermarkets and health food shops I alway end up fishing out the seeds from water melons. But it's a bit of a messy palaver. Am I wasting my time? Should I just swallow them?

Will they do me any harm?
Will they do me any good?

. Yum, watermelon seeds. Actually they are eaten in parts of the world. In Nigeria, the seeds of certain types of watermelon are made into soup. They are eaten in China, as well, although the outer skin is removed by rubbing or scorching it off. In our book, either method requires more effort than simply spitting the seeds out.

However, for the merely lazy, eating watermelon seeds is a mixed blessing on the nutritional front. An ounce of dried watermelon seed kernels contains about 3 grams of zinc (or 25 percent of the Recommended Dietary Allowance for a woman under 50), and 2 grams of iron (or 14 percent of the RDA). On the minus side, it also contains 158 calories and more than 13 grams of fat. And there are quite a few dried watermelon seeds in an ounce.

Unless you chew them, however, the seeds are quite likely to pass right through your digestive system rather than being broken down and absorbed — so the nutritional loss/gain is a wash.

Are Watermelon Seeds Edible

They won't harm you and they won't do you any good :-) If you swallow them whole, your body will not benefit from the minerals inside them.

I also "de-seed" a piece of watermelon before I eat it. It's just because I don' like how the seeds feel between my teeth. They ruin the wonderfull experience of eating a watermelon.

My grandpa always eats cherries with stones. He can't be bothered to spit the stones out. And the cherry stones never harmed him.
Ironically, he cannot swallow a medicine pill. When he has to take medicine pills, he is being very silly and not pleasant to be around. My grandma then tries to hide the pill into a cherry - but it doesn't work!

I never understand why people spit them black watermelon seeds out. They are easy to chew and taste great, and make the whole watermelon eating experience more enjoyable. In fact, I am really disappointed when someone provides seedless watermelons.
