I have thick hair too, with a natural wave. Here are some things I do:
Avoid short layers
Let my hair air-dry instead of blow drying
Use a straightener
My hair is about shoulder-length, I have a few long layers, and it looks best straightened (even if your hair isn't curly or wavy, the straightener will still get rid of some of that extra volume).

Don't worry, it sounds like your downsizing and beginning to doubt your head full of more than likely, gorgeous hair. Girls with full hair look better with layers or even just a nice down-do, that sweeps around your chin. It all depends on your hair texture and the shape of your face. Good LUCK!

almost anything would look good on thick hair.
layering,
making texture,
scrunching,
curling,
straightening,
ect.
my advice for something totally new and in fashion,
get bangs. those are hot right now.
and yes, i mean "normal" ANDD "sideswept"
but me, personally,
i am getting tired of the sideswept ones.
too many people have them.
spice up your look with the classic bangs.
:]
also, you can look through magazines and cut out pictures you like, and there are many hairstyle magazines that show you how to do things, too!
