About 3 years ago I had some dental work and I [later found out] caused 2 abscess teeth. I have not had insurance and did not get this looked at until a few months ago. I ended up having a root canal on one of my teeth and now it is discolored. I have heard of discoloration after a while, but never this soon. I positioned some mirrors so I could see behind my tooth and the center of it is all dark!! Is this normal? I am going back to see my dentist but I have found most dentists to be rude and dance around questions. I have always had dental problems that pertain to health thanks to good ole mom and dad. I have straight teeth and have always taken care of them other than that.

So does this mean my root canal failed? I have no pain...What will happen if this root canal did fail? I need some comfort soon, my appointment isnt until the 28th!

Thanks

I had a root canal fail after many years. Actually it was after two root canals on the same tooth. The tooth was originally damaged from a fall off my bike when I was a child. There's no pain because the nerve is gone. The only recourse was to remove the tooth (it was my front tooth) and I opted for an implant.

Are you going to a regular dentist or an endodontist? An endodontist specializes in root canals, so you might want to seek one out because of the trouble you've had recently. Ask the dentist for ALL your options, sometimes they can do a second root canal, but if the chances of failure a second time are high, you might want to consider removing the tooth, rather than wasting money on a procedure that may not work.

Good luck to you.

You wouldn't have pain in that tooth. They take the nerve out when doing a root canal. I would definitely have your dentist check this out especially where it's dark on the backside of the tooth..

Good Luck.
