Having moved up to Cumbria not so long ago I'm kind of puzzled by its language. I mean what is a 'Cowie' or a 'Yat' and as for 'Lowpin'.........

Does anyone know of any web site that could help me?

Cumbrian English has a big input from northumbrian Anglo-Saxon and therefore has many similarities with Lowland Scots (Rabbie-Burns-language to the unitiated).

'Lowpin' in Scots means 'jumping' but can also refer to the throbbing of an injury.

I disagree that Cumbric was related to Danish any further than their both being Indo-European languages. Cumbric was a Celtic language originally spoken as far north as Dumbarton and the Firth of Forth. It is related to Welsh, Cornish and Breton, and became extinct sometime around the 12th/13th century. I am quite willing to accept that Cumbric could have been influenced by a Nordic language, however.

Hi, There's a lady called Wendy Campbell who lives in Aspatria - she writes books on Cumbrian dialect, it's meanings and origin. Check this link / web address for more details

There used to be a different language spoken in Cumbria. It was called Cumbric and was related to Danish. Have a look on google or wikipedia if you fancy finding out more about it! Crazy to think of all the different languages which used to be spoken around Britain innit?!!!
