The best small estate is the Ford Focus estate, for a large family estate at a low price a Vectra of Mondea are good value. You could probably get a very young motor for that sort of money. Have a look at Parkers Guide on line, you can obtain free price info on new cars based on the mark and type you most like and can see a free review summary too.

If your in the UK i would recommend a Citroen C5 Hdi diesel estate , they are the largest on the market and i currently get around 60mpg around town ,
Last week i had a combi boiler , 8 radiators ,6 packs of 12ft copper piping & cable etc in the back , and there was still room for more , plus i still had the passenger seat free !
These car`s a faultless and i have owned this one since 2001 !you can pick up a 04 - 05 reg for around £8,500 .

Audi a4 2.5tdi - Great engines and terrific build quality, comfortable, safe, good residuals and desirable for resale will not be a problem if you go for a silver, black or blue. On the downside running costs will be slightly higher than average and not as good a load lugger as say a Volvo. Depends how much stuff you want to cart about. Check out the link below

Sensible? A Skoda Octavia TDI of some sort will do all you ever ask of it.
Mental? Did you know that £10K will get you a decent late-used Subaru Impreza Turbo Wagon? I had one and it was the best car I ever had by miles. Sadly had to change as circumstances changed but still pine for it. Test drive one, IMMEDIATELY!!!

You won't get a new one for that money, but buy a Volvo. You could get a decent V70, maybe 52 reg or newer. Huge, comfy, well equipped & almost totally indestructable.
