I'm 50 lbs overweight and have dieted most of my adult life except for the last few years. I've tried all the old/new diets without success. My doctor says It's part of my age and to just accept it. I can't! It's really starting to affect me physically. I guess I should add that I come from an obese family on both sides.

your doc does not understand nutrition by the sound of it, try this if you want to lose weight, improve your health generally, and have more energy then getting some nutritional help is vital. Once your body starts to absorb the right nutrients and vitamins and protein then you’ll be amazed how quickly you will feel the difference, usually within the first 48 hours if you get the right supplements and help. I had no energy and felt just generally rotten all round so I sought the advice of a nutritional coach (whose advice was FREE) and got myself some great products, I even got free samples before I got started so I could see just how good they were!! There is a website called myhealthabc.com If go on there and fill out the details page you will get a call with no pressure about what you need. There is a mall area as well that’s got some great info and its all set out with easy to follow headings so you can find what you want. It’s so easy and the stuff they have is excellent. I have been using their products for over two years and I feel great. I lost 70 pounds in less than seven months!! My sister lost 60 pounds in five months. The stuff is amazing

Try the Master Cleanse diet-it's not easy if you love to chew your food but my husband lost 26lbs in 2 weeks and has been on and off for the last 2 months and has lost a total of 38-40lbs and feels great. His energy level has incresed thus the metabolism has too. You have to have self control and don't use the family as an excuse because you CAN ovecome obesity. You must exercise when dieting-take walks, join the gym, play a sport, lift weights(they don't have to be heavy ones).
My husband is 54 and now weighs 193 and looks and feels great. His friends have also tried this diet and have also achieved results. You can do it-don't give up!

No pill will give you what you need. Simple watching your diet and exercise. You must burn more calories that you take in, that is all. No pill can do this for you. Watch the intake of fat and sugars, walk fast 4 times a week, 30 minutes at a time. If you have access to a gym, lift some light weight. I was your age when I went on my current program and I have lost over 60 lbs. And no pills or gimmicks.

48 is awfully young to be just giving up.

1. Get a new doctor. Any doctor that would say its just part of aging is incompetent. Weight gain because of age is a myth. Your metabolism doesn't slow down, you do!! People typically gain weight with age because they permit their activity level to decline. I know an 80 year old guy who finished Ironman last year. He's not a genetic freak, he just refuses to stop moving and give up.

2. Find a goal. Take up an activity. Dieting is not a goal. Losing weight is not really a goal. There must be something that you want to do that weight prevents you from doing. Use THAT as your motivation. Park the car and walk places. Get a bike. Use it to go to the bank and the post office instead of driving.

no metabolism, and you're only 50 lbs overweight... wow?

i would suggest you stop dieting and see a nutritionist, who can teach you how to eat differently for the rest of your life. also exercise... i run 4+ miles a day. it keeps me feeling healthy, and helps me deal with stress. weight training is a must. also, i'd suggest a counselor or therapist because you seem to be dealing with self esteem issues and depression.
