Take your dog to obedience classes if he/she is old enough.
Keep your socks in your drawers and anything else put away if you don't want the dog to take or chew on it.
Buy the dog his/her own chewing toys.
The dog is probably bored.
Your dog is trying to get your attention.
My 4 1/2 month old American Cocker only takes things when she is bored. Once I take her out to play or walk she tires and sleeps the rest of the time.

Maybe I'm not the best person to answer this - my dog takes pens, socks, pieces of paper - because he gets a reward for doing this, and has been getting rewarded ever since he was a baby. For him, the reward is a treat, and attention from me. For your dog, the reward for taking things might be attention from you and being chased!
Really, the best way to stop the behavior is to not have any human, forbidden items within his reach. You could strategically place some of his toys around, and then play the same attention game that he likes with them. "Oh......boy.....the dog's GOT THE TOY!!!!" followed by chasing by you. Shouldn't take your dog long to 'get' this. Remember to always 'pay' your dog with a treat when he gives you the toy.

Haha, that's a good one. Your not dealing with anything yet. I have an 9 month lab and she is at her chewing stage. I have gotten through at least 5 pairs of slippers(and more). The best way to make him stop is to stuff some treats into a chew toy. Like the KONG. You can stuff treats in there and it's really helpful. They will stay occupied for literally HOURS! If you can't find that, then try using a icecube-he'll play with it, suck on it, and do whatever. But if you dog is spoiled rich(mine is) try going to a pet store and asking for liquid meaty mixers(its actually for food but WTH) freeze them in the freezer and then give it to him. It will really help. And the best part is-he can never grow out of it!

Let him have fun, he is only a (sortof) puppy!
LOL JK
if you want to keep your belongings safe, then just lock the doors with one of those infant locks. they will protect things in dressers and chests. as for the big things, i suggest keeping them in a very high, hard to reach area. Like my friend says, having a dog is like having a child. :)
i have personal experience with this situation, and if your dog really doesn't quit it, then sprinkle your things with baking soda, and for your socks, try soil or a pest-killing spray. It won't harm your dog, it will just keep him away from it. The smell will drive him away and eventually he will just stop touching it.
GOOD LUCK! :)

!. Use a firm voice no yelling and hold eye contact point at her
2. step in front of the object with your feet halfway between a military atease and atinhut. Be sure you are standing up straight and still holding eye contact.
3. When she moves away or lies down and turns away she has surrendered the object
4. That is called claiming an object the way another dog would

he takes them because he thinks they are his toys.
get him some toys of his own (NOT OLD SOCKS OR SHOES) and when he tries to take a sock of yours, take it from him and replace it with a toy of his. he'll figure it out.
