the military is strictly volunteer, although you are supposed to register when you turn 18, not all men do(they only require men to register not women). they do get paid but from personal experience they do not get paid enough for what some of these men do for our country. and as for the drafting, after world war 2 they quit enforcing the draft due to some families did not grow or the last name sake ended. now if they were to induce to draft policy again they would only draft from families with more than 1 son. this is so the family name will continue to the next generation. there are some like the army that give you learning options for when you are released from duty. some people find this helpful when they can not get scholarships, loans or have other means to pay for their college expenses. but as far as young boys if you are meaning boys under 18, no they are not made to go into the military or any other military style school. some kids that are a disciplinary problem bay be ordered to go to a military type boarding school to try to straighten them out. hope this is helpful

It is not a law to serve in the military, but you do have to register with the selective service in the event that a draft is legilslated.

On a personal note it does not hurt both men and women to serve a term in the military.

Not. Military service in the United States is voluntary.

ADDED: To cpinatsi - you REALLY need to look up the definition of the term "mercenary." A mercenary is someone who fights for the government of a nation for pay without being either a citizen of that nation or a member of its armed forces.

What you said is a slap in the face and an insult to our men and women in uniform. You disgust me.

I wouldn't consider a 17-18 year old a "young boy." And no, it's not the law.
