Do you have to be a cat lady to have 3 cats? I have two and was thinking of getting another but i don't want to become a cat lady, i just want them as pets. Is three any harder than 2? i am thinking of toilet training them, so i won't have to clean the litter box at all. Is this a good idea?

Three cats won't make you a cat lady, just a cat lover. Three will not be harder than two--just get the "multiple cat" litter. It might be best if you had all of the cats spayed/neutered--so that you don't become a cat lady :D

Dry cat food is much easier on the litter box than canned food--and has the same nutrients that cats need. Another plus is that the dry food does not spoil, so can be left out all day--and the cats can eat when they want to. If your cats are on canned food, the change will have to be a gradual one--to keep the kitties happy.

I'm hoping that your third cat will get along with the two you already have--it might take some time. Many people have cats to also keep mice, etc. away--and some cats will eat bugs as well.

Three cats is not too many as long as you love cats. After the first or second pet of the same kind, e.x. dogs, there is not much difference when you get more. The only thing that may make you a cat lady is if you sit at home all day with your 27 cats. But you'll be fine with three. As far as toilet training if you can figure out a way to do it that sounds cool!

Toilet training is pretty difficult, and not all cats take to it. The general rule of thumb for litterboxes is 1 + 1, for every cat plus 1 extra, to minimize the chances that someone will go outside the box. And keeping all the boxes super-clean really reduces the chance someone will find someplace else to go to the bathroom. Cats are very territorial, and fussy about their bathrooms. Even fixed cats will be territorial, although not as extreme as their non-fixed counterparts. 3 is not too many, unless you have a small apartment, it may be too crowded and lead to territorial marking. The more cats you have, the more likely you are to have someone not pee in the litterbox-usually if you have 5 or more, someone will start marking. If the 2 you have now are friendly with each other, it will be easier to add a 3rd.

I get called "Cat Lady" and I only have 2 cats. Three cats mean more food costs, toy costs, not to mention cleaning the litter box more often. You also run the risk of the 2 cats not getting along with the 3rd and having them fight or having an injured cat.

My husband said you should have as many animals as people but I dont buy that. I think two cats is just right, three cats could cause some discourse between the cats, or some seriously smelly litter boxes. If you can toilet train them, that is great. But would you have enough time to give each attention?

Nah, If you hold up in an old house or apartment never leaving for long and not taking care of those cats then possibly you could become a cat lady. Toilet training? Mmmm hehe didn't read that one till just now.

You never know you maybe a Red Neck no Cat lady...

Good luck with kitties...

I have 3 cats and a dog. The answer to whether or not 3 cats are too many really depends on you and the amount of time, money, and energy you can devote to your pets.

Firstly, before introducing a new cat to your home, be sure to have it tested by a vet for feline leukemia, feline aides, and other conditions. Also, understand that if you want to properly care for your cats, you will be investing a substantial amount of money. Other than cat food and litter, your cats will need annual exams (some vets recommend bi-annual exams), a heartworm preventative, such as Revolution, because even indoor pets can contract heartworm, and- as your cats age- annual teeth cleanings.

I love my pets, and I would never think of not having them, but I have to say that it is a financial strain. As a single person living on one income, paying for annual exams, heartworm meds, arthritis meds (for the dog), and annual teeth cleanings, the financial cost is great. Also, two of the cats have immune problems, and need frequent trips to the vet and often require antibiotics and other meds. However, my love for them more than makes up for the money I need to care for them.

I'm interested to know what you decide, and I hope that you let us know! Good luck!

You won't be a cat lady if you have 3 cats. We have 5 cats and my friends family have 7. Its just as easy looking after 3 as it is 2.

There is nothing wrong with having more cats if you can take care of them properly & can afford them. But if you don't want to take care of litter boxes, I wouldn't get more. Toilet training is not a good idea. Here's what Feline behaviorist Pam Johnson-Bennett, author of Think Like a Cat, says about the subject:

toilet training cats is an excellent idea, but unless you have multiple bathrooms, it will be a huge inconvenience.
three cats, i think, is the MOST anyone should have because after that at least one of the cats won't be getting the proper love and affection they need/deserve. going from one cat to two to three is really not that hard, but you'll definitely need at least two and maybe three litter boxes before you get them toilet trained.
