This is a defensive mechanism. If people stereotype those who hold positions contrary to their own, they can avoid facing the fact that they may in fact be wrong. In this case, "pro-choicers" rant and rave about "Bible-thumpers," all the while avoiding the real issue: every abortion kills an innocent human being. This is not an opinion or matter of religious faith. It is a simple biological fact.
You don't have to be a Christian to know that killing innocent human beings is wrong. There is even a group of pro-life atheists: http://www.godlessprolifers.org

I can't believe that someone said that abortion is a good solution to a bad situation. It's a bad solution to a bad situation, but oftentimes people see it as the only "solution", and even if bad they make the choice.
Many women who get abortions are not happy about the decision, but make it as a matter of convenience. They might even see it like you do, as killing a living human, but will place that below their right to freedom (of choice, of their future without such responsibility, etc).
My sister is a counselor that specializes in counseling women who have had abortions (and some that are considering it). She is very busy because this is a difficult decision to have made or be making.
I am a Christian, but I do know several non-Christians that are strongly "pro-life", as I am. I imagine their reasons are similar to yours; it just makes sense to them that a child, even if unborn, should be given every consideration that we would give to every other child.

OMG....Don't even Get me started, I'm as Hard Core Atheist as they come and I speak out against abortion as much as or More than any Christian.....
And I do it better because my evaluations are based in EVIDENCE, non emotional observation and logic!
YOU DO NOT have to believe in God to KNOW abortion is WRONG.
The Sad fact is that I've been confronted with MANY militant Pro-Choicers--to kill-- accusing me, as it were, of being a "fundie".
It is, evidently, very hard to believe that people can be against abortion and also not be a Christian.--They also assume all pro lifers are Christian, not Jew or Muslim.
On the flip side, there are religious people I've come face with who can't understand why and how an atheist would be against abortion, since in their false thinking, believe that the moral compass comes from God.
It doesn't, of course.

I think it's an example of the "poisoning the well" fallacy. They don't have to confront the ethical questions raised by abortion if they assume everyone that opposes it only does so from blind religious faith.
I don't belong to any religion and I'm very much against abortion - for the same reasons I'm against the death penalty and the war in Iraq, actually.

Most of the people who say only Christians are against abortion are Christians themselves. I've noticed some (not all) do this to try to Appear to maintain the "moral high ground"... while making us Non-Christians look "dirty". The one's who actually say and believe these things are either really blind or too far beyond the line that it would be impossible to actually have any type of discussion about it without having them trying to take that "moral high ground".
Though personally, I see that as hypocritical when compared to their own Bible.... according to it, Everyone is dirty. So they really have no room to try to appear to take the "moral high ground" during a Discussion.

Someone who is a BIBLICAL Christian will defend the rights of the unborn, but YOU HAVE A VERY VALID POINT!!! Many non-Christians will also. One thing for sure, is that someone who claims to be a Christian and supports abortion is indeed deceived into THINKING they are one! That is AGAINST GOD! It's premeditated murder!

Abortion is nots right. All life big or small must be respected. This is not a matter of religion...it is a matter of respect. If you get yourself pregnant, you must take responiblty for the life that you created.

Abortion is a good solution to a bad situation. We have enough babies being born as it is without trying to rescue each misguided sperm.
Kids should be a choice, not an accident. It's unfair to them otherwise. It's better to be not born than cast off.
