Go to your reputable paint store (NOT home depot or Lowe's) where they sell exactly what you want , GLITTER, yes .

craig and rose do a fantastic glitter topcoat. It looks fantastic and is only visable when the light hits the wall. Great with spot lights. I have used this in my baby's bedroom and it's really effective. You just paint a thin layer on top of any normal wall paint. It can also be used on furniture etc...
the website is www.craigandrose.com. It's part of the feng shui colour therapy range.
Forgot to add! On the same website there is a section for crayola paints and they have a special topcoat that is lots of little stars! Would be perfect!

You could also wipe on a gray metallic glaze after the regular paint has dried. I've done this in two rooms - and the effect is really nice and subtle with just a hint of sheen.

Modern Masters has beautiful metallic paints in 40 colors (check for opaque vs. sheer). Contact them to find who sells them near you. They are very very popular in the painting trade.

Also, you can use a blow dryer to place the glitter or mica powders (use a dusk mask if you use mica powders) on the wet painted surfaces. Practice first!
